Kevin Amoroso
GB Community, Does anyone have recommendations for treating a ganglion cyst in the wrist? I hear this is common among gymnasts. What type of options are out there while avoiding surgery? Thank you!
Pauline Taube
Hi Kevin, Thanks for reaching out. I highly recommend to consult with a medical professional about this. It's not possible to give you any advices behind a monitor. I know that in some cases they have to drain it. Please let us know how it goes!
Zoe Epstein
Definitely talk to a doctor. Sometimes they go away on their own. Other times you can just live with them. Other times they may drain them or use a steroid injection on it. And other times they may suggest surgery as a last resort. I struggled with one for about a year and finally decided to have it surgically removed because it was preventing me from training.
Nick Murray
@Zoe Epstein may I ask where your wrist cyst was? I've been having left wrist issues for a while, and the symptoms don't match anything I'm familiar with. Apparently, cysts can be quite deep, not just near the surface of the skin. I've been having left wrist issues for a while, and the symptoms don't match anything I'm familiar with. Apparently, cysts can be quite deep, not just near the surface of the skin. I actually had two very small ones (they weren't visible except via MRI), one right at the top of the wrist where the wrist meets the hand (close to the surface) and one about 2 inches below my thumb (deeper below the skin). I only had the top one removed, because even though I can feel both of them, only the top one was causing pain during exercise. The top one would flare when I did things like pushups, planks, etc. or any wrist stretching with the hand bent in either direction. The pain would sometimes be strong and sometimes seem fine so I kept thinking it was getting better with rest, but it wasn't. The deeper one would just kind of ache sometimes, with the ache radiating upwards towards my thumb. An orthopedic hand surgeon/specialist was actually able to diagnose it fairly easily once I went to see one, so it might be worth a visit if your issues have been going on for a while.
