rope climbs

I work out at home in my garage. I do not have the ability to do any type of rope climbing as part of my workout. Is there a substitution for rope climbs like towel pull ups or anything of that nature. Also if a towel pull up is an acceptable substitution how many reps would be the equivalent of a typical climb. My current level of pull up fitness is I am able to do sets of 8 reps with 20lbs of standard pull ups.

This is from CrossFit's FAQ page:

3.1. What's the best substitute for rope climbing?

Towel pullups is the consensus best substitute. For more realism, alternate one hand high, one hand low on the towel. Some folks do towel pulldowns, as well. Standard rope length is 15', and standard substitution is 15 towel pulls.

It generally takes the kid about 15 hand grabs to get to the top, any less than that means they are really doing a nice ROM with each grab and that is rare with most of them besides those who are really strong.

Bare in mind, I am talking about legless rope climbs.
