Mid Lumbar Slipped Disk and J Curls

Just a question... about 2 years ago I slipped a disk in my mid lumbar while o-lifting. basically, I have a forward hip tilt that got my back a little too arched, I caught a big weight in the jerk without tightening up and the disk just popped out when I caught the weight. It's never really healed 100%, but I rarely feel it now.

When I do Jefferson curls, I feel the disk start to move and it becomes a little aggravated, but it kinda feels good. I can't tell if I'm feeling pain that will lead to rehab or if my body is telling me to avoid that movement.

So, does anyone know if I'm about to f-bomb my back or if I'm about to get some mojo?

Hi Matthew,

I take it you had the slipped disc diagnosed by an MRI?

Discs don't actually slip, even though the term is widely used. They bulge, and then herniate or prolaspe due the majority of times from too much compression force, sometimes couple with sheer or rotation forces.

All that to say what your feeling is highly unlikely to be the disc moving, but either the disc compressing slightly or else overlying local soft tissues stretching out.

I would strongly urge on the side of caution in your case. How much weight do you currently have on the bar and how long have you been performing them?

Look our for any localised pain in the back and/or any other signs such as altered sensations in the back, legs or feet (or anything that reminds you of the previous episode). If none of these are present then continue and do not be in any haste to add weight.
