Hi,

Can anyone tell me what causes sternum pain during dips?

It doesn't happen all the time. It only happens some of the time and then I stop.

Thanks.

Fairly common I've noticed, especially on rings as people tend to go a little lower than they realise. It's a flexibility thing related to depth.

Rest it, then reduce ROM to pain free depth on thr variation that is giving you grief. It will adapt :)

Basically your sternum connective tissue fibers are not yet strong to train constantly dips.

It just needs time for adaptation, if there is pain after doing dips go back a progression until the pain subsides, and when you do start up again, start with very low volume.

The reason it goes in to the sternum is due to the fat that all the load is begin transmitted there through your collar bone. As you get stranger you are also more able to control the force on your collar bone and your sternum also is able to tolerate more load due to tissue adaptation.
